Enabling Transboundary Impacts

As the only regional trust fund specifically set up to support activities in and between all the Coral Triangle countries , CTCF can provide a mechanism that directs financing to transboundary conservation efforts, supporting conservation investments that transcend national boundaries.

Our Priorities:
  • Coral Triangle priority seascapes
  • Current and future Marine Protected and Conserved Areas (MPCAs)
  • Multi-year projects with regional or transboundary impact
Our Projects
As we work to develop our first pipeline of projects, see below some examples of project types that may be funded.
Protect
Powering towards 30 x 30
  • In support of the 30x30 ambitions of the Coral Triangle countries, we will support the design and creation of new community-managed protected areas.
  • Through climate-responsive management planning, we will enable Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) to withstand the challenges of a changing climate.
  • We will invest in the capacity building of MPA management units, ensuring the stewards of these marine sanctuaries are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed for effective conservation.
  • We will also champion the expansion of locally managed marine areas led by Indigenous Peoples, recognizing the invaluable role they play in sustainable resource management.

Restore
Improving the resilience of coastal and marine ecosystems

We are dedicated to facilitating natural recovery and rehabilitation for climate-impacted marine and coastal ecosystems.

  • By promoting sustainable agriculture practices that reduce runoff to reefs, we will actively contribute to the vitality of these underwater sanctuaries.
  • We will introduce financial incentives for ecosystem restoration to encourage communities to become stewards of their natural surroundings.
  • We recognize the urgency of addressing storm-prone reef systems, and will develop a rapid response plan to safeguard these fragile ecosystems.
Transform
Catalysing a sustainable relationship between people and the ocean

CTCF aims to transform communities and their relationship with the marine environment.

  • Through strategic waste management investments, we will support reef-dependent communities in their efforts to maintain the pristine beauty of their surroundings.
  • By developing robust governance structures and providing capacity building for fisher cooperatives, we will empower local communities to actively participate in the sustainable management of fisheries, ensuring a harmonious balance between nature and livelihoods.

Supporting RPOA2.0
The Coral Triangle Initiative's Regional Plan of Action sets out the regional commitments of the six Coral Triangle countries.

The Coral Triangle Initiative's second Regional Plan of Action (RPOA2.0) is a comprehensive 10-year plan with a 2030 goal to enable coastal communities and coastal and marine ecosystems in the CT region to be more resilient to adapt to impacts of climate change, natural and anthropogenic threats. With a focus on protected and conserved areas, CTCF is designed to support certain components of CTI-CFF’s Regional Plan of Action 2.0 and the Coral Triangle countries in their 30 x 30 ambitions.

The Coral Triangle Trust Fund believes in the power of collaboration.

We bring together governments, civil society, donors, technical experts, and other actors to safeguard this epicentre of global marine biodiversity.
